Valerie Goldstein
Josh Thill

Our love story started the same way all of the classics start. A $24.99 a month commitment to match.com to help sift through the many fish in the sea here in sunny Denver, Colorado. Josh had spent a good part of his 30’s looking for a Mrs. and was beginning to think the online dating path was one that led to a dead end. Valerie was a fresh face in the online world and had been on a handful of mediocre dates but hadn’t found anyone to write home about yet.

Our fate changed on a summer day in 2014 when Valerie got a glimpse of her future mister. While browsing the fellas in Denver and comparing them to her mental checklist she stumbled on a handsome blue-eyed brunette. Josh aka NetJet1 was an educated, sarcastic, older man (check, check, check) that enjoyed antiquing, sports, and witty conversation. So, as the story goes, Valerie, or COplusHI put on her big girl pants and sent him a message. The contents of said message are widely debated and forever lost in the tombs of match.com archives but vaguely translated said “Hi. Let’s date.” After a handful of text message and phone calls they decided to meet for a drink on Tennyson street. **Spoiler alert: this would later become the site of the proposal just over a year later**

Our first date was not one of fairy tale comparison. In fact, it was awkward at best. We had spent many moons talking about our passions and ambitions of the phone that when it came to meeting in person the crickets could be heard over the silent hum of awkwardness between us. We dined on Moscow mules and house chips and in a lucky turn of events decided on a walk around the neighborhood to reduce both the noise in the bar and (hopefully) the awkward small talk. Indeed, the walk lead to beers at another local watering hole and a leisurely stroll to Valerie’s car that she parked in front of her friend’s house in case Josh turned out to be a murderer (Shout out to Bridget and Mike for living in the West Highlands!) A second and third date later ensued that same week.

Though we joke it was our sixth date when we moved in together, it was in-fact around 6 weeks after meeting that we moved in together. Valerie recalls the fear she felt when informing her family that she would be shacking up with a man they’d met twice. As all good mothers do when their daughter shares this news she said “how do you know he won’t kill you in your sleep?” Thanks Mom for your attention to detail. Anyway, it was official. We were living under one roof together as a couple by September 2014.

The next year was one filled with about a zillion dates, a handful of fabulous vacations, and a dash of future planning.

August 12, 2015 Josh had decided the day had come to seal the deal with Valerie for eternity. With a calm demeanor and full heart Josh asked Valerie’s parents, her brother, and her sister-in-law for permission to ask Valerie to spend their lives together. Josh raced home from Louisville that evening to find an exhausted pajama-clad girlfriend on the couch. It is important to know at this point in the story that we go on a walk in our neighborhood nearly every night in the summer so to see Valerie in pajamas and in for the night at 7:45pm was both a problem and a surprise. Josh persevered with his fake plans to go “see a building down the street to determine if it would photograph well” (what?!?!)

So, with a little nudge, Valerie changed into her best yoga pants and off they went down the very street their first date had occurred. When the walk ended at the mythical photo shoot site, and the location of their first walk they took together June 22, 2014, Josh coaxed Valerie towards a bench as the sun was setting over the glassy lake. Valerie, in true form, was less than cooperative and took the break in the walk as a good time to do some lunges. Eventually, Josh convinced Valerie to sit next to him at which point he got down on one knee and asked Valerie to be his wife. Josh says to this day he has never seen the expression Valerie made when she realized what was happening. Valerie screamed YES!! Before any sort of question was asked (oops) then sniffled and asked if he had a flashlight on him to see the shiny new ring he had given her.

We spent the next several hours calling our loved ones and sharing the news while drinking champagne and taking selfies with the ring (of course). Here we are, in 2016 planning our wedding day and feeling like the luckiest ducks on the planet. Not only did we find each other in a sea full of unfitting fish but we are also lucky enough to call the best people in the world our friends and family. We are counting down the days and hours until we say “I do” with all of our favorite people as witnesses. Hint: If you’re reading this, you’re one of them. We want to sincerely thank every one of you for being the people that you are and for your hand in getting us where we are today.

We feel an incredible amount of love, support, and excitement that cannot be put into words. Thank you to our families for loving and supporting us through this journey and for not rolling your eyes at our save the dates (funny, right?). Thank you to our friends for choosing to love us in spite of our quirks and being the most exquisite group of folks we know.

We simply cannot wait for the day we can share our love and celebrate it in Portland but also, we are bursting with excitement to soon be Mr. and Mrs. Thill and all that our future holds as husband and wife.

The People Standing Next to Us

Bridesmaids

Bailey

Bailey and I met at CSU (GO RAMS!!) as the chosen ones to undergo teacher training in 2006. We later became neighbors where we spent many an evening drinking wine on the porch, reciting every line of FRIENDS, and calling in sick to work. Bailey made the trek across the Pacific to visit me in Hawaii and told me the tales of being a real grown up on the mainland; an adventure I eventually joined her on. Bailey and I share a love for the number 23, betting on black, and cooking our little hearts out. Teacher of the tots. Fit Mommy. Kind. Super friend.

Madison

Madison was lucky enough to call the closet of my classroom home in 2013. We knew we'd be forever friends after exchanging sarcastic remarks and sharing many bottles of wine. Madison is a lover of life and a calming spirit that is so very dear to me. Teacher of the words. Fashionista. Mom of the year. Wonderful friend.

Laura

Laura moved in next door when we were both in diapers. We have been side by side for 28 years of life events. We also shared a Waikiki apartment during a period in our lives when we refused to be grown ups. Today Laura and I have taken to adulthood quite well. Laura is a successful realtor, wife, and mommy-to-be! Seller of the houses.  Party pants wearer. Kind soul. Forever friend.

Ali

Ali and I met while teaching in Adams county in 2012. We became fast friends over our love for teaching the littlest learners, travel, and eating delicious things. Ali and I (and the gang) have traveled to New York and Jamaica together. Ali is still fighting the good fight on equal opportunity education for all. Advocate of the babies. Spunky. Thoughtful. Fabulous friend.

Amy

Amy and I met in the Summit Hall dorms in 2005. We later inhabited a one bedroom apartment in Aiea, Hawaii where we conquered the free world and followed our aloha spirits. After both ending up in Colorado again, we continued to partake in shenanigans of all kinds. Professor of preschool.  Adventurer. Survivor. True friend.

Christa

Christa and I met after my older brother, Alex scored a date with her! After about 354 years of dating, Alex gave me the gift of a sister-in-law and friend all rolled into one. Christa and I have a wonderful relationship fueled by fancy cocktails and board games. Countess of the numbers. Wise. Haver of the fun times. Super friend and sister-in-law.

Groomsman

Alex

Alex is the newest member of team groomsman, because yes, you guessed it, he's Valerie's older brother. While we haven't known each other very long, we've been on quite a few awesome, family adventures and he's also already managed to save my life a time or two. He's about the happiest dude I know and also one of the smartest. We can geek out over sports and technology like nobody's business and he's a worthy adversary when it comes to anything competition. Smart as a whip. Happy as a clam. Luckier than a leprechaun. Always ready to help.

Zack

Zack is my youngest brother and also, possibly the smartest brother. We grew up together and share many of the same memories and experiences. All things that we can, mostly, laugh about these days. He is my go-to for all things Political, Socioeconomic and/or Middle Eastern related. Though we hardly ever agree, we always have good laughs in between our never ending power struggle for who's the 7th most important Thill sibling. Doctor to-be. World traveler. Animal lover (Kinky the cat forever). Communist fashionista.

Hyde

Hyde is the farmer on team groomsmen. I've know him almost as long as I've known Pete but we didn't become good friends until junior high. He's the guy that you absolutely can't conquer if you're having a silly, weird or off-putting contest (ask him about the hangars or quarter soccer). We've had so many laughs about the dumbest things imaginable but he's also a true friend that would be there in an instant if I needed him - such as making the trek from SD to OR to be a groomsmen in your old high school buddy's wedding. Oh and he probably should've beat me up several hundred times for how rough Pete and I played sports with him. Fortunately for us, he's also a bit of a gentle giant as well. The Johnny Appleseed of Central South Dakota. Giant for life. Heart of Gold. Definitely a pepper.

Travis

Travis and I met in college one fateful day after a graphic design class that I'm sure we both thought was B.S. We ended up being roommates for 3 years and eventually became the best of friends, even though at that time, I was horrendous to live with. He's the guy that convinced me to move on from SD and the main reason that I made my way to Colorado (thank you for that!). He's one of my closest friends and the guy I turn to when I need to have a chat about life or the general goings-on of society or the nature of fools in business or creative endeavors. Amazing musician. Self-made man. Poet who knows it. Captain Dad/Husband.

Pete

Pete is my oldest friend from team groomsman. We've been friends since I chased him down in the 6th grade and it wasn't easy cuz he tried to run. I believe with all of my heart that I'd still be trying to pass Algebra II if not for him and his mathematical wizardry. We also, attended college together where we shared the same major and the same 5 year plan. We even have similar jobs to this day, though his is more high-end. He's about the best friend a guy could have, but don't expect him to talk your ear off. He's pretty quiet but when he does speak, it's usually pretty hilarious or super truthful or both. Best Friend for Life. Dad of the Year. Creativity Coming out His Ears. Craft and Handling Master.
